The requirement for Task 1 was to create a mind map that highlights the various issues involved in defining mental health, specifically the concepts of abnormality and normality, as outlined in Assessment Criterion 1.1. I included key issues in the mind map such as cultural relativity, statistical infrequency, deviation from social norms, failure to function adequately, and deviation from ideal mental health. These concepts illustrate the challenges in creating a universal definition of what is considered "normal" or "abnormal" mental health. After creating the mind map, I selected two of these issues—cultural relativity and deviation from social norms—to explore in more detail in a 300-word written explanation. I discussed how cultural differences affect what is considered acceptable behaviour in one society versus another, making universal definitions difficult. I also examined how social norms are influenced by time, place, and context, meaning what is seen as abnormal in one era or community may not be viewed the same way in another. I used relevant examples and supported my discussion with academic sources using Harvard-style referencing. The work remained within the required word count, and I ensured clarity, critical thinking, and relevance throughout to meet the assessment criteria effectively.
