Cultural Influence
As a part of a culture that is more inclined towards individualism than to collectivism, the values engrained are self-reliance and individual achievements (Krendl & Pescosolido, 2020). These elements have influenced my perspective when it comes to mental health, such as my expectations of mental health consumers and their responsibilities towards their condition. This leads to the emphasis on self -management, even though autonomy and self-reliance are virtues, it is necessary to understand that often mental health patients need support from their environment including caregivers and families as many mental health factors are beyond individual control Thus I control my urge to unintentionally force the patient to take autonomous decisions of their treatment plan as the social support helps in maintaining good mental health by preventing it or by providing a positive environment for recovery process (Bjørlykhaug et al., 2021).
While doing reflection on the impact of cultural values as a healthcare provider, has aided me in comprehending the influence it can garner on the patients thus it is crucial to be adaptable and open-minded such that the care is not only aligned with the individual beliefs but also sensitive to various cultural backgrounds and personal needs of the patient. By being aware of this factor, I manage to provide patient-centred and empathetic treatment.
Consumers Recovery, Their Strengths and Wellbeing:
As a nurse taking care of patients who suffer from mental health issues, it is my responsibility to recognise their strengths and help them use them in their recovery. This requires empowering them to participate in their treatment plan and supporting them to develop their strengths such that if a patient shows discipline and resilience while managing the symptoms (Winsper et al., 2020), I should focus on enhancing the discipline and resilience by letting them self-manage in a controlled environment and set targets that are practical and achievable and help with coping strategies.
To achieve positive outcomes, I should focus on strength-based approaches and engaging them in the decision-making processes, supporting their autonomy and acknowledging their achievement in terms of targets they have achieved in the recovery plan. I must also make an effort to comprehend their value and beliefs and integrate them into the care plan. As Chisholm and Petrakis (2020), stated these values will be beneficial as there will be a focus on the positive therapeutic outcomes and improvement of the care plan rather than the difficulties and problems, this will align with the recovery-centred approach that highlights the importance of empowerment, potential for growth and hope.
