Case 2: Strategies to Promote Shared Decision-Making and Person-Centered Care:
Shared decision-making is a popular approach when it comes to patient or person-centred care. Shared decision-making promotes evidence-based practice and takes into account the patient's concerns, values, preferences and desires (Resnicow et al., 2022). Aoki et al. (2022) state that depression is a significant public issue, and shared decision-making provides an evidence-based framework for health communication and collaboration. This helps with the treatment of patients whether it is for mental illness or any other physical disease. As for our patient in the video James, who seems depressed and will go through a blood test for thyroid level as per the doctors’ decision, the shared decision will be an informative exchange between the patient and the healthcare provider. This collaboration and discussion results in informed decision-making as the patient can talk about treatment options. As our patient is a male adult whose mother is involved in his care, family history is important to understand if the gastrointestinal issue and depression are familial. Here nurses can also acquire from the mother if anyone in the family suffers from hypothyroidism. The participation of the family is a critical part of shared decision-making and treatment plan, a family member can work as an informant, ensure medication intake etc. Also, the patient needs multiple resources to deal with the feeling of hopelessness and isolation. This includes acknowledging the negative perception and addressing it, it is often followed by fear of discrimination and avoidance of help and resources which results in unaddressed mental issues (TEDx Talks, 2019). The nurse should ask if there exists any stigma related to mental illness in the family and provide possible education on how to deal with it.
