DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS:
The purpose of the experiment was to observe changes in the evolutionary adaptation of P. fluorescens to different environments and the effect on their macroscopic and microscopic phenotypes over multiple intervals of time. Figure 2 shows the results for Part B and shows the presence of wild-type and mutant P. fluorescens colonies and their relative proportions under homogeneous and heterogeneous conditions. Figure 2 shows that in non-uniform smoothness, the number of colonies decreases as the day increases and shows a decreasing trend. As for heterogeneous increase, the number of colonies begins to increase and shows an increasing trend. Under homogeneous conditions, uniform fold colonies are absent but smooth, homogeneous P. fluorescens species tend to increase their number. A heterologous variant of P. fluorescens also existed on day 0, but no heterologous variant was observed.
Figure 3 shows the results of part C of the experiment, where the optical density (OD) of the smooth and wrinkled versions was measured under homogeneous conditions for 72 hours. In Figure 3, we see that there is a trend toward increased OD for both P. fluorescens variants, but the smooth variant has an overall higher OD compared to the wrinkled variant, as indicated by the trend lines. Overall, this lab provides insight into how bacterial populations can adapt to environmental changes through natural selection, leading to microevolutionary changes over time.
