Health-related risks associated with the disease:
Ectopic pregnancy:
The most common health risk that is associated with chlamydia in females, includes ectopic pregnancy. According to Xia et al. (2020), in this type of situation, the embryo is implanted outside the female reproductive area (which is the uterine cavity), which is also known as tubal pregnancy. This kind of pregnancy poses the fetus at risk, and in most cases, the pregnancy ends and the fetus dies as the fallopian tube is unable to provide adequate nourishment to the fetus. This is one of the most serious health risks of chlamydia trachomatis and can lead to further health complications for the patient such as attacks, vaginal bleeding or pain in the abdomen.
Pelvic inflammatory disease:
Another health risk of chlamydia is the occurrence of pelvic inflammatory disease, which according to Den Heijer et al. (2019), is an inflammation of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries, caused by the ascendence of chlamydia trachomatis from the lower genital tract.
Testicle infection:
According to Paira et al. (2023), epididymitis is another health risk whoch occurs due to the ascendance of urethritis, which is primarily caused by trachomatis. In this condition, the coil behind the testicles gets inflamed, and it results in discolouration. Swelling, tenderness, and pain.
Prostate gland infection
Another health risk of chlamydia, reported by Bielecki et al. (2020) is the occurrence of prostate gland infection when the bacterium reaches the prostate glands. Therefore, as a result of prostatitis, males feel extreme pain during any kind of sexual activity and experience pyrexia, pain, discomfort and chills.
Congenital infection:
It has been reported by Jouglet et al. (2019), that the prevalence of chlamydia in an expecting mother, can result in causing interstitial lung diseases in newly born babies, which can occur during birth. This type of condition refers to congenital infections due to chlamydia.
