The assignment required an analysis of a major industrial dispute in Australian employment relations, focusing on stakeholder interests, the causes and unfolding of the conflict, resolution mechanisms, and long-term implications. The 2011 Qantas employee lockout was selected as the case study due to its significance and national impact. The report provides a structured overview of the dispute, identifying key triggers such as Qantas’ internal restructuring plans, outsourcing strategies, and external pressures, including the Global Financial Crisis and rising fuel costs. A detailed examination of the roles, methods, and goals of major stakeholders, including Qantas management, three unions (TWU, AIPA, ALAEA), the federal government, and Fair Work Australia, was undertaken. Each stakeholder’s approach to advancing their interests and managing the dispute was evaluated within the broader context of Australia’s employment relations framework. The analysis also assesses the resolution process, particularly Fair Work Australia's intervention under Section 424 of the Fair Work Act 2009, and evaluates its effectiveness.
